Product Description

We offer 4 rebuild services for the driveshaft on your 2002. We also offer a shortening service if you have upgraded to a 5 speed (or other) gearbox. Please read thoroughly the descriptions below to determine what you need done.

STANDARD LENGTH REBUILD:

A completely rebuilt and balanced drive shaft with new U-Joints, new nose bushing and new center bearing. Our driveshafts are done using the proper stacking method of the u-joints. This insures the longest and smoothest life of your driveshaft. Beware of rebuilders who offer “serviceable u-joints”, this means they don’t have the necessary staking tools and often these driveshafts will not have as long of a life-span. We also only use high-quality center bearings that have proven to stand the test of time. This product is NOT applicable if you have an early long-neck differential (AKA 3 Piece Driveshaft).

SHORTENED W/ 3-BOLT FLANGE:

A completely rebuilt and balanced driveshaft with new U-joints, new center bearing, and new nose bushing. The driveshaft is configured for a Getrag 245 5-speed conversion using a 3-bolt output flange. Many Getrag 245’s have 3 bolt output flanges for use with a 6 bolt guibo (aka flex disc). The 6 bolt guibo is a fair amount stronger than the earlier 8 bolt type. Contrary to the myth that the drive-shaft must be measured and cut to varying lengths, BMW maintained an amount of adjustment at the rear crossmember and center bearing, and there is no ambiguity on proper length (unless your car was in an accident and improperly repaired). So if you’re setting up a Getrag 245 5 speed, this driveshaft will work great. THIS OPTION WILL NOT FIT GETRAG 240’s.

SHORTENED W/ 4-BOLT FLANGE:

A completely rebuilt and balanced driveshaft with new U-Joints, new nose bushing and new center bearing. While many 320i 5 speeds (Getrag 245) have 3 bolt flanges, some early units have 4 bolt flanges – if yours does, buy this driveshaft. Our driveshafts are done using properly staked u-joints. This insures the longest and smoothest life of your driveshaft. Beware of rebuilders who offer “serviceable u-joints”, this means they don’t have the necessary staking tools (or lack the patience). Often these driveshafts will not have as long of a life-span. Contrary to the myth that the drive-shaft must be measured and cut to varying lengths, BMW maintained an amount of adjustment in the driveline and there is no ambiguity on proper length. So if you’re setting up a Getrag 245 5 speed, this driveshaft will work great. THIS OPTION WILL NOT FIT GETRAG 240’s.

CUSTOM SHORTENED LENGTH and FLANGE:

Here you can get a custom driveshaft for your swapped 2002 (M42, M20, Getrag 240, F20c, etc.). We can only shorten, we cannot add to the stock length of the driveshaft. Drive shaft will receive new u-joints, nose bushing, center bearing, and of course be balanced. We do not shorten the rear section of the shaft as this measurement should not change (unless for some reason the mounting point for the center bearing has been relocated on your vehicle.) If you are using something other than the normal 3 or 4 bolt BMW flange then you may need to supply that piece along with your core. WARNING: We need you to specify the length of your drive shaft. LENGTH IS MEASURED FROM FLANGE TO FLANGE OF THE DRIVESHAFT ITSELF. In other words, mating surface to mating surface (guibo to diff input flange). We are not responsible if you give us a length with the nose or the guibo included in that length. DO NOT MEASURE FROM FLANGE ON TRANSMISSION TO FLANGE ON DIFFERENTIAL. If you have any questions at all about measuring the length please email us prior to placing your order.

HOW TO ORDER:
Place your order online. You MUST send your core for rebuild, we do not carry any cores for sale. Please budget for a couple week turn-around so as to not get yourself into a bind. We will be making an identification mark on your core to ensure that you get the same core you sent in returned to you. If you have any questions about this, please email us. click here to see what constitutes as a good core.

Your core is BAD if:

  • the u-joints are not staked.
  • it has dents, cracks, bends, or twists.
  • it has repairs in the middle of the tube.
  • the u-joints have already been re-staked once before.
  • if it is not a 2002 4 speed driveshaft.

SHIPPING:

We will no longer be accepting driveshaft core deliveries at our location. Email pmccarthy.iem@gmail.com with pictures of your driveshaft to ensure the core is good, and we will provide the shipping address to you. ANY DRIVESHAFTS SHIPPED TO US WILL INCUR ADDITIONAL SHIPPING FEES!!!!

Local customers (Southern California) that wish to drop off their driveshafts are welcome to do so, please be advised you will be paying for shipping of your driveshaft to our rebuilder and for return shipping as well. These fees can fluctuate so they are not listed but you will be told the cost prior to the shipment being made.
