August 2013 - Dave Berke - 2002 Wagon
CAR OF THE MONTH: August 2013 – Dave Berke’s 2002 wagon. Dave underwent the conversion in 1981. It was the result of a final design project done to receive his bachelor’s degree in 3D Designs. Dave’s been an enjoyable guy to deal with over the years, so his project is our feature car this month.
In regards to the actual work that went into the car it’s best to quote Dave.
“Quick summary, removed rear glass. Cut the roof back to where it’s flat. Then removed the partition between the rear seat and trunk. Built a steel frame under the trunk floor out to the taillights and put vertical posts up in the rear corners to support the 2nd roof. Welded a beam where I cut the roof from side to side. Cut the edges off the trunk lid and welded them to the body to continue the body lines. Then I welded a roof from another 2002 over the trunk opening. I made a folding rear seat and a frame where the back glass was, then finished it by building the tailgate.”
Dave hasn’t turned it into a hotrod but has rather replaced the needed parts over the years. Small things like IE stainless steel brake lines have gone in along with a host of replacement bits.
